About the project
Landscape 2 : Horizons is a score for three or more performers and alternatively a set of instructions for a sound installation. It premiered on August 20, 2005 at Soundwalk 2005 in Long Beach. It is the second piece in a series of graphic scores that explore connections between landscape and its representation in visual and sonic art.
The work is based on a series of photographs taken by the artist of horizons in three cities: South Beach, London and Chicago. The photographs were laid out in a row, suggesting a continual three-part landscape, as seen below.
Shapes were then abstracted from the images in the photographs to create the final score (below).
This score may then be used by performers in a live context. Instructions for live performances are included in the Guidelines for Performance (92KB pdf file). This document also describes the process used to translate a live performance of the score into a generative sound installation, a never-ending sonic horizon. For an installation, a slightly altered version of the score is utilized which divides the shapes into a series of modules that are then performed as individual pieces and used as source material for a generative piece. The module divisions are illustrated below:
