About the project
"Four Painters" consists of sonic illustrations representing the visual works of four prominent 20th century painters.
Liner notes from the original online release:
For Paul Klee
Violin samples, as well as a recording of Chicago's Grant Park Symphony Orchestra tuning before a performance are mingled with manipulated samples from a recording of myself creating a watercolor painting to depict the tension between Klee's training as a violin player and his desire to become a master painter, a conflict that informed many of his mature works.
For Agnes Martin
A looped sample of wind rustling through leaves gradually grows longer, builds to a peak, then grows shorter again as a slowly developing synthesized drone gives the piece a quiet sense of structure and light representing the connections with nature that exist in Martin's beautifully minimal, repetitive watercolors.
For Kazimir Malevich
The sound of myself drawing a square, industrial sounds, and echoing sounds from within large architectural spaces make reference to Malevich's Suprematist squares, Architekton drawings and sculptures.
For Cy Twombly
A slowly developing drone, samples of graphite and chalk being used to draw loops, stones being rubbed and struck together, along with night time ambience combine to evoke the quiet mystery of Twombly's working method of painting without additional light after nightfall, as well as his untitled white-on-gray paintings of the 1960s.
